The flagship race distance of the weekend - the Karkloof 100 Miler. A Leadville inspired journey following the infamous out ’n back format, this 100 miler will test even the hardiest of runners. Well assisted and stocked aid stations, beautiful single trails, jeep track and the best finishers belt buckle in the country await.
But it won’t come easy. You’ll need to train smart for this one, and with our 16-week 100mile programme we discuss everything from hydration tactics, foam rolling, recovery, drop bag and race pack advice to mention just a few.
You’ll arrive at the start line brimming with both trail running knowledge and a fitness level that will far surpass others standing next to you and primed to cruise through this course.
Our 16-week training plan is based on the classic periodisation technique to training and includes advice and guidance gathered from our experience at the Leadville 100 and multiple other ultras over our ultra running careers.
Our app also includes a dedicated race group for any tips, tricks, and ideas you and your fellow runners have, along with almost daily titbits of information and advice we’ve gained from 33+ years of running.

Karkloof 50 Miler
Personally our favourite distance! Just enough to push your limits of the running ultra world, with enough of a bonk factored in to bring you back down to reality and test your true grit.
During our 14-week training plan for the Karkloof 50 Miler we discuss ultra tactics and tricks that include nutrition, hydration, toenail talk (seriously) and drop/race bag advice amongst other tips and tricks.
The plan comprises of BASE, BUILD, PEAK and TAPER blocks with sufficient rest and recovery built in to avoid injury. We've included sufficient speed work to build your aerobic engine for the rolling hills of KZN, and some uphill repeats to tackle the 1,700m D+ this race brings.
We also have a dedicated race group for any tips, tricks and ideas you and your fellow runners have along with almost daily titbits of information and advice we’ve gained from 33+ years of running experience.
Your coaches are always online, ready to answer any questions or queries you have, and our aim is to have you physically peaking and at your best going into the race.

Karkloof 30 Miler
Many choose this as their first ultra as you run through the beauty of the Karkloof area in this flatter faster 30mile/50km, but don’t think you can take it easy; you’ll be working hard for a finish in this 30mile distance, the gateway to the ultra realm.
Nutrition, hydration, tapering, heat training, and high-altitude training to name but a few are all items that we discuss within with your 12-week training plan. We want to have you arriving at the Karkloof 100 camping grounds with not just a superior level of fitness, but a vast amount of trail running knowledge allowing for a solid finish and overall ultra experience.
12-weeks of focused training await: sessions that include tempo sets, interval training and as well as the odd longer weekend runs. Hill sessions are also included to have you well prepared during the 30 miler for that beast of a hill at the 17k mark. At 1.4km long you’ll need the legs and stamina to conquer this elevation gain.
Our training is split up into 4 distinct training blocks and your two coaches are on hand to answer any of your queries and concerns with our combined 33+ years of running experience.

Karkloof 20 Miler
“Run your best race” - the Karkloof 100 catch phrase. It’s not the 100 miler but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to do our darndest to get you to do just this, run your best race!
For those new to the trail running world we prepare you with not just an epic level of fitness at the end of the 12-week plan, but also arm you with a plethora of running based knowledge to set you up for your journey to longer races, maybe even the 30 Miler next year eh 😉
Throughout our in-app coaching, we take you through various race specific sessions that work on your overall base fitness and endurance levels allowing you to arrive at the start line ready to tackle this 20mile event.
We've included sufficient speed work to build your aerobic engine with a few weekly uphill repeats to tackle the 650m D+ this race brings. Although it’s a relatively flat and fast course by trail standards, the altitude (all above 1000 meters) will have you digging in order to maintain pace so don’t get complacent!
Our app also provides a race specific chat just for those within the 20 Miler training plan to discuss all things race and running related without distractions.
