Addo Elephant Trail Run

Addo 44km

A popular distance in the Addo Elephant Trail Run series, the Addo 44k course takes the runner along usually inaccessible corners of the famous Addo Elephant Park. From Kabouga Gate to Zuurberg, you’ll need the strength and training to tackle this continuously undulating course.

Run over a varied mix of technical 4x4 roads, jeep, single track and sandy sections, the 44k route gradually climbs out of Zuurberg up to checkpoints 1 and 2 before a steep wall of climbing awaits. You’ll get the bulk of your elevation gain over the next 5km which will tire you out nicely before being treated to the second half of the race! This is when things get interesting - endurance and grit are key to having you continue onward to finish strong.

Our structured training plan prepares you accordingly, with 12 weeks worth of running coaching broken down into 4 distinct phases: a BASE, BUILD, PEAK and TAPER block. You’ll find sufficient rest and recovery in between, aiding muscle (and mental) recovery.

We gradually build your aerobic and anaerobic engine to get you to physically peak going into race day come 18th March. You will also grow as a runner as our sessions are peppered with course specific knowledge and a multitude of ultra and general running advice - enhancing your overall ability to run better. Join us and others in training for this epic 44k run and we will make sure you smash it with energy to spare for a beer at the end!

Addo Elephant Trail Run 44k

Addo 76km

With the 19th running of the Addo Elephant Trail Run series, the 76k is a great opportunity to showcase your hard work and training going into this epic event. With a total elevation gain of “just” 2,630D+ you may think this is one of the easier races on the circuit? THINK AGAIN!

Tough cut off times and technical terrain ensures you’ll require adequate and focused training in order to tackle this course. A variety of terrain including 4x4 roads, single track and jeep track with the remoteness of it all brings with it an element of toughness requiring both physical and mental strength in order to complete.

The first half of the course peppers in a good amount of undulating vert, but it’s in the second half that a proper training plan will reap rewards! A steady climb from CP3 to CP4 is a warning for the monster climb to come after CP4, with a little kick in the tail at the end of the race as you climb to the finish line one more time, so you’ll need to be conditioned and have enough left in the legs for a back loaded course.

Our structured 14 week plan is broken down into 4 distinct blocks: BASE, BUILD, PEAK and TAPER. We have too allowed for that all important rest and recovery in between, aiding muscle (and mental) recovery. Varied hill repeats and longer interval training are a staple of this plan, teaching your body to operate swiftly and efficiently out there on the course.

We’ve also included sufficient speed work to up your VO2 max and a few longer runs with progressive efforts having you pushing into the final KMs of your training runs. This helps adapt the system to enable you to swiftly tackle the hillier second half from checkpoint 4 onwards and still have enough in the tank for the final finishing kilometres of the course.

We gradually build your aerobic and anaerobic engine to get you to physically peak going into the race on 18th March. You will also grow as a runner as our sessions are peppered with course specific knowledge and a multitude of ultra and general running advice - enhancing your overall ability to run better. Join us in training for this epic 76k run in the beautiful Eastern Cape mountains and we will make sure you smash it with energy to spare for a beer at the end!

Addo Elephant Trail Run 76k

Addo 100 Miler

You’re on your own for this one…

Hah, not a chance! Real talk; we recommend a 16 week plan to train for a miler, but if you’re on here now you should also know that there’s less than 16 weeks to race day, so our recommended miler plan length has sailed.

That said, it’s never too late to get started, and 14 or 12 or even 10 weeks of structured training is better than no training. Depending on your fitness levels and experience we may be able to slide you into our 76k or 44k plan and make some adjustments for you as we go along.

We won’t promise miracles, but we can help you finish stronger than no training at all, and our race and running advice will still be relevant, so please contact us directly to discuss your situation and we’ll make an assessment and take it from there. We’d dig to get you over the finish line for the headline miler of the Addo Elephant Trail Run series, so hit us up!
